“Innovating for Sustainable Growth: a Bioeconomy for Europe” -  a strategy and action plan for a sustainable bioeconomy in Europe.

Announced yesterday, 13 February, the Strategy spearheaded by DG Research and Innovation Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, plots a roadmap for creating a society far less dependent on fossil fuels. By developing this strategy the Commission has, for the first time, united a vast, highly-skilled value chain and workforce of Europeans, from the farmers and foresters cultivating EU land and forests to the scientists, innovators and industry sectors working towards providing greener products and sustainable processes.

The plan includes 12 concrete actions to be taken by the EU, Member States and Regions, focussing on three key aspects: developing new technologies and processes for the bioeconomy; developing markets and competitiveness in bioeconomy sectors; and reinforcing collaboration between policymakers and stakeholders.

The Strategy will build on the 7th Framework Programme, Horizon 2020 and other existing policy initiatives, such as the European Innovation Partnerships.
